The accident at Mineola on last Friday which resulted in the death of young Ansel Haggerty was it seems an unavoidable one. It occurred as follows: Mrs. George E. Scriber of Floral park with her two children in a road cart and driving a rather spirited horse, left the fair grounds to drive to her home. A passing locomotive whistling and playing of a band of music so frightened the horse that he became unmanageable and dashed into the crowd which was on its way to the depot. In his mad rush he ran into and over James Haggerty and his son, Ansel. They stood on the edge of the sidewalk looking at some jewelry on a stand and were totally unconscious of danger. Mrs. Haggerty was near them, but was utterly powerless to help or warn them. They were thrown down and the horse trampled on them both. Ansel received a cut in the side of his head, just behind his right ear, a very wicked looking wound. The boy never regained consciousness. He was brought to his home on Saturday and died early Monday morning. Mr. Haggerty is about but is suffering from the severe bruises that he received. It is a very sad case and our people sympathize with the afflicted family. The funeral was on Wednesday.

The above appeared in the October 1893 edition of a Long Island newspaper.
