Mineola has a new powerhouse as Corpus Christi's fourth-grade girls opened up the season with two impressive performances. In their season debut the girls from Mineola traveled to New Hyde Park and took on a strong squad from Holy Spirit. Paula Pinto controlled the offense from the point guard position as she dished the rock with pinpoint accuracy. Jackie Behan and Megan Brady led Mineola in scoring with four points each, as Katie Dul and Kayla Vesley had strong games at both ends of the court contributing three and two points, respectively. Catalina Garcia came off the bench and provided strong defensive pressure for this well-rounded team.
Corpus Christi played their first home game to a standing room only crowd and they did not disappoint their fans, as they came out fast and never let up against St. Anne's. Heather Gessner and Erin Carr-Fragiacomo led all scorers with six points apiece and Valentina Duran had four points. Janine Miller and Allie Orlando were a force on the boards while Maureen Purcell had several steals. Sarah Couto showed her dedication as she cheered on her team for the bench, after suffering an injury early during the preseason.
A special thanks to Father Robert Batule who came back to Corpus Christi and said a prayer for all the girls during halftime of their first home game. Father Batule was also able to join Corpus Christi CYO on their basketball outing to the Nassau Coliseum, which hosted an exhibition game between the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics. Fun was had by all even receiving a special treat when Corpus Christi was announced as winners of a contest which enabled the group to move up to the "front row."
