With the remnants of Huricane Isidore swirling the clouds overhead, the MHS Girls JV soccer team took their game on the road to Sewanhaka HS. Utilizing her speed, Katie Keegan opened the scoring in the first half to put Mineola ahead 1-0. With the wind at their backs, Sewanhaka looked to tie the score before the half, but were stymied by Mineola's defensive unit led by Jess Handibode and Alyssa Glenn as the half came to an end. Now with the wind at their backs, Mineola looked to build on their lead and did so on goals by both Alyssa Ortiz and Johanna Valencia, as each scored their first goal of the season. Sewanhaka scored their only goal mid-way in the second half to avoid the shut out as Mineola won 3-1.
Looking to extend their win streak to six games in league play, Mineola faced Mepham HS. Clearly dominating from a offensive and defensive perspective, Mineola's took and held a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kerry O'Connel as the first half came to a close. Looking to widen their lead, Mineola's Katie Keegan, Jess Antonison and Liz Sanderleaf scored in the second half as Mineola won going away, 4-0. For Jess, this was her first opportunity to come out of goal and play an offensive position. She wasted no time hooking in her shot on goal for her first goal of the season.
With their opening day loss at the hands of Wheatley HS still fresh in their minds, the "schedule gods" afforded the Lady Mustangs the opportunity to avenge their loss by once again facing Wheatley HS. With the game played at Mineola, the Lady Mustangs opened the first half playing an aggressive two way game. With Mineola unable to convert on a number of scoring opportunities, and both teams setting a defensive tone to the game, the first half ended in a 0-0 tie. Opening the second half, Mineola struck first as Kasey Hughes opened the scoring, converting a crossover pass to give the Lady Mustangs a 1-0 lead. Minutes later the game was delayed a half hour as Wheatley's center defenseman suffered a lower leg injury which required assistance from EMS technicians and an ambulance. Needing to focus on the game at hand and expand their lead, Katie Keegan led the way as she scored her first of two goals for the game to give Mineola a 2-0 lead. With that score Wheatley's offensive never threatened, and along with Katie Keegan's second goal of the game, Mineola put Wheatley away 3-0.
The Lady Mustang JV squad, with these three wins, moved their record to 7 wins/2 losses overall (7 wins/1 loss in conference). In league play, the offense has scored twenty five goals (2.50 goal/game), and is led by Kasey Hughes with six goals, Katie Keegan with five goals, Liz Sanderleaf with four goals and Allie Kain with three goals.
