The Mineola High School Varsity Football team rolled to its fourth win in as many games on Oct. 5. The Mustangs notched a 10 to 7 win at Manhasset. After a scoreless first quarter, senior quarterback Rich Medlock connected with junior runningback Jerelle Harrison on a 3-yard scoring pass to get Mineola on the board. Senior Paul Bispo booted the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Later in the second quarter, Harrison finished off a 60-yard drive with his second touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run. Bispo's kick gave the Mustangs a 14-nothing lead with a minute left in the first half. The Mustangs finished their scoring in the third quarter. Medlock found senior Adam Minsky with a 9-yard scoring toss to give Mineola a 20-0 lead. The extra point attempt failed. Manhasset avoided the shut-out when Cullen Molinari took off on an 80-yard punt return in the fourth quarter. Medlock finished the day hitting on 10 of 15 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Medlock has nine touchdown passes through four games. He also picked-off a pair of Manhasset passes while playing safety on defense. Junior middle linebacker Jim Holubowich led the defensive effort with 12 tackles. The win left Mineola 4 and 0 on the season heading into its homecoming game against Island Trees.
The Mineola Varsity Boys Soccer team ran its overall record to 11 wins and no losses with a pair of wins. The Mustangs edged Friends Academy 2-1 when Helder Mendes trapped Alex Tinoco's cross and scored on a Volley from 16 yards away to snap a 1-1 tie. Mendes' goal came with five seconds left in regulation. Peter Marson had tied off of Tinoco's corner kick. Greg Weiss made 10 saves as the Mustangs escaped with their second one-goal win of the season over Friends. Mineola then came away with a 1-0 win at Oyster Bay. The lone goal of the game came in the second minute of the second half. Ramon Valente scored from 18 yards away off a pass from Peter Marson. Weiss made seven saves in net for the shutout. After the two wins, Mineola had tun its conference record to 7 and 0.
The Mineola Varsity Girls Soccer team has hit a hot streak. The Lady Mustangs notched three straight wins over Glen Cove, Carey and Great Neck North. In the victory at Glen Cove, Coach Christine Wiedman's squad scored three times in the first half and held on for the win. Nikole Tsabasis opened the scoring early in the game. Maryanne Georgeou and Alison Casrnabuci scored the other first half tallies. Goaltender Allyson Murphy made five games to get the win. A 3 to 2 win at Carey came in quite a different fashion. With the score tied at 2-2, Melisa Hock crossed the ball and Georgeou put it home from 8 yards away with 4:30 left in the second overtime. Tsabasis scored in the first half as Mineola took a 1-0 lead. Katie Steen scored in the second half. Murphy had 10 saves in net in the victory. The Lady Mustangs notched their third straight win back home in a 5-1 stroll past Great Neck North. Melissa Hock registered her first career hat trick. All of her goals came in the first half and helped Mineola to a 4-0 lead. Tsabasis and Caitlin Herrara scored the other goals. Murphy and Georgeou split the duties in goal. Murphy had five saves and Georgeou four stops. With their three straight wins, the Mineola women upped their conference VI record to four wins and seven lossses.
