Having opened the season on the road, the MHS Girls JV soccer team came back to the high school for their first home game against Great Neck North HS. Mineola dominated this game in both the offensive and defensive zones and kept Great Neck North a step behind the play. Mineola's Kasey Hughes opened the scoring in the first half, with Nicole Peralta adding a second goal just before the end of the half to put Mineola ahead 2-0. Mineola continued its domination as Liz Sanderleaf scored on a penalty shot to put Great Neck North away 3 -0. Special kudos go to Mineola's goalie Jessica Antonison and the defensive unit, led by Alyssa Glenn, as Mineola "pitched" its second straight shutout.
Showing no mercy, the "powers that be" scheduled a non-league game for the Lady Mustangs the very next day versus Floral Park HS. Mineola showed the effects of having played a game just sixteen hours previous as they lost to Floral Park 3-0. With Mineola's reaction to the ball just a step late, Floral Park took advantage of those tired legs as they put two high and long shots over Mineola's goalie along with a deflected shot from a crossover pass. Defensively, Floral Park shut the door on Mineola's offense with a resounding slam.
Looking to get back on track, and fresher from a Sunday off, Mineola faced Glen Cove HS. Clearly dominating from the opening whistle, Mineola's freshman made a statement from a offense perspective. Both Kasey Hughes and Allie Kain each had their first "two goal" games as a JV player. For Allie Kain, these were her first two goals as a member of the JV squad. Marisa Jetter finished up Mineola's scoring with her first goal of the year as Mineola won the game going away, 5-1.
Back on track, Mineola next faced Hicksville HS. Carrying over her play from the Glen Cove game, Allie Kain opened the scoring to give Mineola a 1-0 lead. Mineola's lead was short lived as Hicksville came back to score two of their own to take a 2-1 lead as the game moved late into the second half. However, Mineola was not ready to give up as Liz Sanderleaf scored on a long shot from just outside the eighteen yard line to tie the score 2-2 and send the game into overtime. Carrying the momentum of their late half score, Mineola's Kasey Hughes put Hicksville away with her overtime goal to give Mineola a 3-2 win.
The Mineola HS JV squad, with 4 wins/2 losses overall (4W/1L in conference), consists of: Jess Antonison, Mallory Calinita, Jen Costa, Nicole DeStefano, Alyssa Glenn, Jess Handibode, Lauren Harbich, Kasey Hughes, Marisa Jetter, Allie Kain, Katie Keegan, Amanda Klein, Lauren Massa, Nicole Peralta, Liz Sanderleaf, Jamie Silva, Kerry O'Connel, Alyssa Ortiz, Johanna Valencia, Ashley Volino, and Julia Yan.
