The Board of Trustees will hold a Public Hearing on Wednesday, Oc. 2, at 6:30 p.m. at the Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue regarding:

A proposed local law amending Chapter 30 of the Municipal Code entitled "Zoning" Article III entitled "Business Districts," Section 30-33, entitled "B-3 Districts" (Special Office Use) creating subsection (5) so as to permit parking garages which provide municipal parking in 35 percent of spaces.

All interested persons will be given the opportunity to be heard regarding this matter. Following this hearing at 7:30 p.m. there will be a public meeting. The public is likewise invited to attend.

The Board of Zoning and Appeals will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue, regarding the application for a variance to maintain a one-story enclosed porch with insufficient front yard setback at 266 Brown Street.

The public is invited to attend and to be heard regarding this application.

This year's Mineola Mustang Run/Walk will be held on Sunday, Nov. 17.

The Nassau Pops will present New York, New York with special guest performer Daniel Rodriguez at the Tilles Center on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 3 p.m.

On Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m., Effie Apelast-Weinberg will perform selections from various operas.

Ms. Apelast-Weinberg has been featured in the New York Times and Newsday etc.

"The Many Faces of Arthritis"

It is estimated that approximately 43 million Americans today are living with some form of arthritis. Although it is more prevalent among older people, arthritis does not discriminate. It affects people of all ages and is a leading cause of disability in the United States. However, there are therapies that have been proven to be effective in managing the disease. In recognition of Arthritis Awareness Month on Long Island, Winthrop-University Hospital's Perspectives in Health series and the Long Island Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation will co-sponsor a free lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 8. "The Many Faces of Arthritis" will begin at 7 p.m. at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola, at the corner of Second Street. Guests are asked to register by 6:30 p.m. and to park in the rear of the building.

Winthrop's Division of Rheumatology, Allergy & Immunology will provide an overview of the major types of arthritis. Steven Carsons, MD, chief, Division of Rheumatology, Allergy & Immunology; Elise Belilos, MD, director of Women's Health Program in the Division of Rheumatology; and Gary Rosenblum, DO, director, Geriatric Rheumatology, will discuss the latest advances in therapy. They will include information on Cox 2 Inhibitors, biological therapies, and new and upcoming medications. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.

Older shower heads deliver up to five gallons of water a minute. Newer (post 1992) showerheads have a maximum flow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute.

How do you know if you should replace your shower head? The following "test" will assist you in making that determination.

"Turn on the shower using the pressure you normally use, hold a bucket that has been marked in gallon increments under the spray. Time how many seconds it takes to fill the bucket to the 1-gallon mark. If it takes less than 20 seconds, you could save money by purchasing a low flow shower head.

Joanne McGerty will, on Friday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m., conduct a class in Fall Wreath Making at your library.

The program is limited to 20 adults and there is a $5 materials fee.

Seniors can learn what they need to know about using drugs safely at a free lecture sponsored by Winthrop-University Hospital's Health Update for Seniors program on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

"Drug Interactions: What You Need to Know," will address concerns specific to seniors, emphasizing the progress that has been made in increasing the safe use of drug therapies among those in their golden years. The program begins with blood pressure checks at 1:15 p.m., followed by the lecture at 1:45, at the Mineola Community Center, 155 Washington Avenue in Mineola.

Irving Gomolin, MD, Chief of Geriatric Medicine and Chief of Clinical Pharmacology at Winthrop, will focus on seniors and drug safety, as well as discuss the future of drug therapies targeted for specific illnesses relevant to seniors, such as Alzheimer's Disease. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer period.
