The Breakers, Mineola's U11 girls travel team, played their first game of the Fall 2002 season defeating the Manhasset Supersonics 3-2, at the Harbor Links soccer fields.
On this hot and humid day, the Breakers opened their game flat and showing a bit of off- season rust in their defensive play. Despite their flat play, the Breakers opened the scoring in the first half on a shot by Marissa Peralta, taken off a loose rebound from Manhasset's goalie. However, this lead was not to be enjoyed for long, as Manhassett came right back with a goal to tie the score at 1-1 and took the lead 2-1 at the close of the first half as they capitalized on the defensive unit's trouble in clearing the ball out of the defensive zone.
Using halftime to catch their breath and talk about their first half lapses, the Breakers came out strong for the second half. Displaying an aggressiveness to the ball both defensively and offensively that characterized the team's play last season, Mineola tied the game 2-2 on a goal by Megan McCune. Having tied the game, Mineola capitalized on McCune's goal and the strong leg of their new teammate, goalie Stephanie Cutrona, to set up Mineola's winning goal. Having made the save on a Manhassett shot, Stephanie cleared the ball with a booming kick which bounced at midfield and over Manhasset's last defender. This allowed Marissa Peralta to beat the defender by a step and shoot on the goalie. Marisssa's second goal of the game came on a soft touch shot to the left side of the goal, which beat a diving Manhassett goalie, and put Mineola ahead to stay 3-2.
The Breakers team, which consists of Kristen Flynn, Emily Glenn, Mary Henry, Catherine Hoban, Emily Kain, Dana Klein, Megan McCune, Lauren Olsen, Marissa Peralta, Muireann "Mo" Phelan, Ryann Pitcavage, Maryann Sanderleaf and Alexa Vojvodic, welcome two new members for the Fall 2002 season: Stephanie Cutrona and Kalie Medlock.
