Athletic Booster Club President Wins Award for ABC Sports Radio
ABC Sports Radio's John Cloghessy of Mineola is the recipient of this year's prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award, one of the oldest and most prestigious awards in broadcast journalism, for Best Sports Coverage,
announced ABC News vice president of radio Chris Berry. Cloghessy garnered the award for his reporting in "Perspective: From High School to High Stakes; The 2001 NBA Draft," an examination of the increasing number of high school players entering a league whose average age continues to decrease.

"The Edward R. Murrow Awards are a great honor and when it comes to sports journalism, there is no one more deserving of this recognition than John. We applaud and celebrate their decision."
Cloghessy has been with ABC Sports Radio for nearly a decade and has anchored SportCasts on the Information and Entertainment Networks since 1993. Cloghessy has also anchored coverage from the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and the NFL Draft. During the 1998 baseball season, he wrote, produced and anchored the popular Home Run Scoreboard daily broadcast which kept track of the Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa chase to break the home run record.
Prior to joining ABC, Cloghessy spent six years as principal sports anchor at WFAN in New York - the nation's first all-sports radio station. During his stay at WFAN, Cloghessy also covered the NFL and handled play-by-play duties of Seton Hall basketball. He also worked nine years for KSTT-WXLP radio in Davenport, Iowa, where he was the play-by-play
announcer for the University of Iowa football team. Cloghessy has also worked for WPTW radio in Piqua, Ohio and WTVB-WNWN in Coldwater, Michigan.
Cloghessy is a graduate of Bishop Noll High School in Hammond, Indiana and St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.
Aside from his career accomplishments, Cloghessy is also active in Mineola School District athletics, serving as the Mineola Ahtletics Booster Club president. His coverage of the Mineola Mustangs can often be seen on the sports page of the Mineola American.
