The Mineola Minors Travel baseball team played a tight game Thursday night against East Williston. After clubbing Malverne 21-6 in their first game, the minors played a different type of baseball in East Williston.

Starting pitcher John Carlo Clancy hurled two strong innings and allowed only one run as his teammates got off to a fast start and put two runs on the board after a lead-off single by Anthony Fabrico and a double by Tom McKeever, who scored by stealing second and home.

In the second inning, Nick Conte went for broke with a bold attempt to steal after a walk but East Williston prevailed and he was nailed at second with a strong throw and a charity call by the ump.

The two middle innings were pitched well by Nicky Franzini but the East Williston bats came alive and tied the game despite great fielding plays by Jack Clarke, who tagged out several runners at third. East Williston went ahead by one run in the fourth after a sharp single by Billy Sullivan went for naught and he too was caught stealing in the aggressive style of this game.

Mineola took off again in the top of the fifth inning with a double by T.J. Winters, walks by Matt Manteria, Nicky Franzini, Joseph Calabro and a rifle shot single off the bat of "big Mike" Castellana and the plating of four more runs with very excellent base running and more steals of home. Calabro's on-base percentage seems to be in the stratosphere this summer.

In the sixth, Matt Clancy walked and stole second after Sal Massa went down on strikes as did Daniel McAree and Jamesy Pastoressa in what some observers thought was an oversized strike zone.

The last two innings were pitched by Tom McKeever, who allowed no more scores by East Williston as stellar fielding by Anthony Fabrico at shortstop, catcher Matt Manteria and centerfielder T.J. Winters helped the cause.
