More than 400 cancer survivors, their families, guests and caregivers united in an uplifting celebration of spirit, courage and life at Winthrop-University Hospital's fifth annual Cancer Survivors Day recently.

Gathered under a giant tent, survivors shared experiences and milestones in their battles with cancer, as well as words of encouragement and hugs of support. The focus of the evening was on life, and dedicated to all those who have dealt with the diagnosis of cancer.

Harry Staszewski, MD, chief of Oncology/Hematology in Winthrop's Institute for Cancer Care said, "We take great pride in providing a superior quality of cancer care, yet our staff values equally the relationships we have with our patients because we understand the importance of compassionate care."

The Honorable John P. Colbert, mayor of the Village of Mineola, presented a proclamation declaring a village-wide recognition of Cancer Survivors Day, and Assemblywoman Muareen O'Connell shared a warm welcome with everyone who came to celebrate. In addition, Anita Heiser, a breast cancer survivor from Massapequa, shared words of inspiration with the group, stating that "while cancer is an ongoing battle, the support of loved ones is what helps one endure."

Cancer Survivors Day is a national recognition of the indomitable spirit of the more than 8.9 million Americans dealing with a diagnosis of cancer. Winthrop's celebration provided an opportunity for those who have been diagnosed with cancer to join with their guests and the Winthrop doctors and nurses who took care of them. Guests enjoyed a gourmet dinner buffet, music and raffle prizes. Attendees, both young and old, expressed an undying spirit as they celebrated, laughed and danced. And, as the evening drew to an end, guests did not say "good-bye," but rather, "see you next year."
