The Outward Bound class offered at the high school is an educational experience like no other. It does not consist of homework and cramming for tests. Instead it requires an individual to challenge him or herself by exposing them to various adventures and situations. The quest to expand their comfort zones is done with the support of fellow classmates and assisted with educated professionals. This class is offered to Mineola High School seniors in place of a gym class. It meets every other day just like a regular gym class and requires annual field trips.
This year's Outward Bound class was great. The year began with a trip to BOCES Project Adventure where students learned rock climbing and engaged in the high rope activities. The next trip was to a charter boat where we spent the day fishing. We then went on our first overnight trip to PEEC environmental center where we learned orienteering and hiked along the Delaware Water Gap. Two more trips included cross-country skiing and downhill skiing. Whitewater rafting and mountain biking were completed next. We ended the year with horseback riding on the beach and a day spent in the historical town of Amityville.
Looking back at the year, I see how much each student has grown as a result of this class. New friendships have been made and experience has been expanded. The opportunities given to each individual as a result of this class were both exciting and memorable. The things we have learned as a result can be taken with us through our lives and put to use in our everyday encounters. Being a graduating senior, I could not have asked for a more memorable class where support and encouragement were the key ingredients for success. I highly recommend this class to any student who is seeking growth and education that can only be fulfilled outside of a classroom with the help and interest of others.
