Speaking in a firm and powerful voice Msgr. Eugene Murphy, retired chaplain at Winthrop Hospital and resident of Corpus Christi Church, delivered the homily at the 50th anniversary mass of his ordination. Thirteen priests and a deacon concelebrated. Msgr. Murphy used as his theme Pope Pius XI's "What It Means to be a Priest." Msgr. Murphy has been at Corpus Christi for the past 25 years.

In spite of the rain, wind and cold the Mineola Fair went on as scheduled. Among those who stopped by our table to say hello were: Lois Hanson, Jane Eimer, Harry Kellerman, Nick Sekesan, Jim Kerney, Carol Barber and son Ray, Jose Martinez, Veronica Maggi, Victoria Dovale, Vitalina Aguas, Rose Marie Rodriguez, Patrick Rodriguez, Mathew, Lorraine and Jennifer Ciesinski, Kristin Schwenk, Debbie Schwenk, Anita Pfeffer (Maria Borrego, Dorothy Rudolph, Cecibel Terezakis and Lorena Romano all walked 60 miles for breast cancer). Also at the fair were Michelle Schimel, town clerk; Edward Panzella; Jeanne Lazar; Doris Bezmen; Maria and John Luca; Naveen Mallangada; Amelia Intagliata; Gloria Runo; Dorothy Trojan Thomas; Gabriel Parajos; Madeline Joseph; Rosa Mendes; Ann Mooney, Karen Goulet; Tom Dwyer; Lisa Pusey; and Linda Stewart.

Walter Weismantel continues his acting career with the Pelican Players in Florida where he and his wife Grace now reside. They formerly lived on Roosevelt Avenue and owned a bakery in the village.

That amazing Alice Grom of Arlington Street is a waitress at the diner. Although 80 years old, she works all day on her feet, then goes home to cook dinner and do housework.

Joe Fitterer was the Mineola Postmaster from 1973 to 1983. He and wife Amelia live in East Williston. Amelia is the widow of Fred Goldsmith of Mineola.

Recently ran into Kim Delaney formerly of Mineola. She and her husband John now live in Manhasset.

When we said that bickering among the parents had forced Mineola to do away with swim meets with out-of-towners, we were referring to the families of the swimmers from other villages. Mineola will continue to have swim meets with Mineola teams competing against other Mineola teams.
