With a day in May set aside to pay tribute to those veterans who paid the ultimate price in sacrificing their lives in times of war in defense of freedom, it never feels like one day is enough. After all, these veterans gave up every day of their lives. Those who died in battle or were POW-MIAs, never recaptured the lives they led before answering their country's call. Those who were wounded in battle and are spending their remaining days in a VA hospital continue to give a part of themselves and all those who have served know the price that has to be paid for freedom.

On Monday, May 27, community members, various organizations and members of Mineola Private Adolph Block Post 1305 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Mineola Memorial Post 349 of the American Legion recognized Memorial Day with a parade, which began at Wilson Park, and ended with a ceremony at Mineola Memorial Park.

Mayor John P. Colbert, Deputy Mayor Lou Santosus, trustees Elizabeth Conlon, Linda Fairgrieve and Jack Martins with veterans Carl Marchese, Manny Grilo, Sal Cataldo and Father James Bowman, new pastor of the Corpus Christi Parish, along with other guests.

At the ceremony outside the library, World War II veteran Walter Hobbs led the Pledge of Allegiance and Vietnam War Veteran Felice DeLape gave a benediction about the unity of America.

History and events have tested the resolve of America many times, pointed out Mineola American Legion Commander Sal Cataldo. Yet, America showed its resolve with the sacrifices made by many. Commander Cataldo recognized those who gave of themselves and are not here today. "We can only hope they understand how much we appreciate them," he said.

Mineola VFW Commander Manny Grilo spoke about the fear that goes with being in war. War originates because unfortunately there is still hate and bigotry in the world, he said. But, in the United States, citizens of every race, creed and religion have managed to live in peace.

In commemoration of Memorial Day, 23 wreaths donated by the Village Party, Mineola Democratic Club, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 349, Knights of Columbus 2502 Council, John S. Davanzo Mineola Republican Club, Mineola Portuguese Center, American Legion Post 349, Mayor John P. Colbert, Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Mineola Auxiliary Police, Boy Scout Troop 45 and the VFW Post 1305, were placed around the monument in Memorial Park.

The VFW is currently looking for World War II and Korean War veterans from Mineola who were killed in action for the purpose of putting their names on a monument. If you know of anyone, contact Commander Manny Grilo at 248-4669.
