Are you at risk for a stroke? Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, as well as a leading cause of long-term disability. But there are early warning signs and preventive steps that can be taken to help minimize your risk. Winthrop-University Hospital, in an effort to identify those at risk and create awareness, will hold a free Stroke Risk Assessment on May 23. The program will begin with registration and assessments at 4 p.m., followed by the lecture at 5 p.m., at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola, at the corner of Second Street. Parking is available in the rear of the building.

Elzbieta Wirkowski, MD, Director of Cerebral Vascular Disorders at Winthrop, will discuss the warning signs of stroke, and how to identify and reduce your risk factors. The assessment will be performed by several Winthrop healthcare professionals. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.

The assessment is a part of Winthrop's extensive health outreach program, held in conjunction with the American Stroke Association. It is sponsored by the Division of Neurology, part of Winthrop's Institute for Neurosciences. Space is limited and reservations are encouraged.

To make a reservation and receive a free stroke risk assessment, call 516-663-8305.

First Street from Andrews Road east to Mineola Blvd. is undergoing concrete road panel repair.

Union Street is undergoing excavation of the roadway and the asphalt base should, weather permitting commence on May 22.

Cornell Cooperative Extension has done extensive research into how you can care for your lawn organically.

"A healthy lawn will not need pesticides. If properly maintained, your lawn will be naturally resistant to weeds and harmful insects."

Some of these tips are:

* Mowing--You should not mow your grass shorter than 2 inches which helps to prevent weeds from getting enough sun and water.

* Watering--To maintain a healthy lawn it generally takes about one inch of water per week.

* Mulched Lawn Clippings-Mulched grass clippings returns essential nutrients back into the soil.Cornell's testing indicated that "...leaving the (grass) clippings all season (on your lawn) is equal to one full fertilization."

* Proper pH-Your lawn to be at its best, needs a pH of between 6.2 and 7.0.
