MAA Report
Mineola Girls sponsored by Venezia's Garden Center opened the season with a thrilling 5-5 tie (called due to darkness) against Merrillon #2. The girls from Mineola played their first game of the season as if they had been playing from months with timely hitting and exciting fielding, making both the coaches and parents proud. Sarah Pritchard lead the game off with a single, Tiffany Klein followed with the first of her two hits. Heather Gessner was next as she also went two for two, but Mineola was unable to score with the bases full. Mineola would not be denied in their half of the second inning as Lizzy Garcia led off with a single followed by Ashley Pusey, Allie Orlando and Vicky DiBella, who got the first RBI of the season as Lizzy scored. The Athan girls (Angela and Marisa) kept the scoring going as they also singled in the inning. In the bottom of the inning, the defense took over as Brittany Cunha teamed with Maureen Purcell and Diana Fox to make three sparkling fielding plays. The top of the third picked up where the second had left off as Vanessa Rusciano singled and would later score as would Brittany. Ashley Thakur would single in her first at bat and Paige Illiamo would also hit a hot shot as the girls from Mineola scored two more runs. The fourth and final inning of the short-ended game saw Delores Chichi and Krystie Kern get their first hits of the season. Samantha Riccardi had two good at bats and played some great defense as Mineola pounded out 18 hits.
