The Breakers, Mineola's U10 girls travel team, won their first game of the Spring 2002 LIJSL season, by defeating the Hicksville Patriots 1-0.
On this sunny and cool afternoon, both teams opened their game with defense as the order of the day. Each team's defense was characterized by tight, man on man defensive coverage and controlled clearing passes to their midfielders. While Hicksville had the wind at their backs in the first half, they were unable to take advantage of this offensive boost. Mineola's defense was able to neutralize this advantage and stop Hicksville's offense. This defensive mode continued throughout the first period and left the teams in a scoreless tie at the end of the first half.
The second half opened with each team hungry for a goal. Mineola, with the wind at their backs, looked to increase the offensive pressure on Hicksville. They did so by moving Alexa Vojvodic up to the forward position to take advantage of her strong shot from outside the box. That move paid off with Alexa's scoring on a shot in the upper left corner of the goal which put Mineola ahead 1-0 with less than five minutes left in the game. Hicksville, realizing that time was running out, put intense pressure on Mineola's defensive unit looking for a tying goal.. However, Lauren Olsen and Emily Glenn saw to it that Hicksville did not score. Lauren repeatedly cleared away passes to turn back Hicksville's forwards and Emily made a tough save to seal the win in the last minute.
With this win, The Breakers evened their season record at 1 win and 1 loss. The team now looks forward to playing in the second round of the Waldbaum Cup tournament at Fort Totten, Queens against the Bayport Bombers.
