The Mineola Athletic Association will hold its annual Opening Day Parade on Saturday, April 13. The parade will assemble at the Jackson Avenue School at 9:45 a.m. and commence at 10:30 a.m.
The parade route is as follows:
Jackson Avenue west to Wardwell Road - north to Jericho Turnpike; east to Mineola Blvd.; south to Second Street; east to Willis Avenue and ending at the Mineola Little League Complex.
It is anticipated that approximately four hundred children and one hundred adults will be marching. The public is invited to attend the Opening Day Ceremonies which will commence at 11:30 AM at the Little League Fields.
Nestled on the Long Island Sound is the park like campus of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
The Barstow House, which overlooks the Long Island Sound, houses a museum which is open to the public, with some exceptions, Tuesday - Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
Should you decide to visit the campus of this "Forgotten Jewel", you may wish to consider the weekend of April 13 and 14 when the varsity Intercollegiate Sailing Team will be competing in the Admiral McLintock Cup Races.
To reach this campus, take Great Neck Road north (bearing left even when road forks off to the right). As you continue north the road changes names to Bayview Avenue then to West Shore Road. At the end of West Shore Road there is a stop sign, turn right onto Kings Point Road. Proceed to the next stop sign and a left onto Steamboat Road. The academy entrance/main gate is only one block ahead.

Weather permitting, the construction of new handicapped accessible curb ramps is scheduled to begin this week. Approximately 60 new curb ramps will be installed from Burkhard Avenue to Saville Road, and north to the village's northern boundary
If you have traveled Westbury Avenue recently you have noticed roadwork being done. This preparation work, road "patching" and grade adjustments to structures, are the preliminary work for the road to be resurfaced.
Rehabilitation of East Second Street, Union Street and Senate Place
Construction activities for the rehabilitation of East Second Street, Union Street and Senate Place have begun. The project will begin on Union Street and includes the removal and replacement of concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters and driveway aprons. Upon completion of the concrete work, the roadway will be reconstructed and a base asphalt will be installed. It is anticipated that the construction activities on Union Street will take approximately 60 days. Once the road base asphalt is completed on Union Street, construction activities will begin on East Second Street and Senate Place. Upon completion of concrete work and the installation of the asphalt road base, all the streets will be resurfaced with a wearing course of top asphalt.
The preparation work for the Union Street Project has begun. Extensive improvements ie., replacement of curb, sidewalks, driveway aprons and road resurfacing will occur, weather permitting, within the next sixty days.
Recently a pre-construction meeting was held regarding the Operation Downtown Project. The scope of the project includes the removal and replacement of sidewalks with replacement of brick pavers and the installation of new street lighting, benches, waste receptacles and bike racks. It is anticipated that construction will begin within the next three weeks.
The Leisure Pass Office is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. These hours are for appointments for all new members and all those needing to have their pictures retaken. All members from last year need only mail in their applications with a check and the proper documentation (please refer to your application for the necessary proofs of residency).
Leisure Pass applications take approximately 3 -5 business days to process, so we urge you to apply early. The early registration deadline is May 15. After that date the cost of a Leisure Pass rises to $8 and the cost of a caretakers pass will be $58.
