The term "backflow prevention" refers to protecting the public water supply from substances which without a "backflow device" might be inadvertently introduced into the water supply.

Our Water Department has an inspection program to locate possible backflow concerns.

Irrigation systems and swimming pools are examples of when a "backflow device" is required.

To ensure that the installed "backflow device" is operating properly after installation the device must be tested every year by a certified tester, who is required to send a report to the water supervisor.

If you would like more information about these devices and/or information regarding "certified testers" please call the Water Department at 746-0751.

If you have a basement toilet, a backwater valve is required to be installed on your sewer line in order to protect your basement from wastewater flooding.

This valve acts as a check-valve, by allowing the wastewater to flow in one direction. In the event that your sewer line "backs up" or becomes clogged, the valve will protect against wastewater entering the basement via the toilet overflowing.

All basement toilets and backflow preventors require a plumbing permit which is available at the Building Department.

Before embarking on your lawn and "ornamental" spring program, you may wish to consider organic fertilizers and weed prevention products.

Federal law mandates that the labels of all pesticides must include safety guidelines for use, storage and disposal.

It is suggested that you read the label before you purchase any product that you will be using on or about your property in order that you fully understand what the impact of applying the product will be on your children, grandchildren and on the environment.

Some of the "household" cleaning products that my mother used have now come back (such as white vinegar). An interesting website is www.cleaning.com

This site has information about cleaning stained walls- (dip a rag in some white vinegar and wipe down walls from top to bottom ); to clean wallpaper (for vinyl surfaces, use detergent and a soft cloth but be careful not to over wet the wallpaper) and many more helpful hints.
