The Jamaica and Hempstead Turnpike Company was incorporated on March 20, 1812.
A road was constructed from Grand Street, Jamaica along the present Jamaica Avenue and present Hempstead Turnpike.
In the early 1860's these roads became "plank" roads. The first tollgate was at Hollis (What is now 174th Street), the second toll was at Elmont near the present county line and the third and last toll was at West Hempstead.
These toll roads were sold in 1897 and a trolley line was built to Belmont Race Track which shortly thereafter was extended to Hempstead.
