Reports of children being victimized through the use of the Internet are a cause of concern for many parents. Yet, there are precautions that can be taken to help minimize the risk of danger to a child. Parents can learn these measures at Winthrop-University Hospital's free lecture, "Internet Safety for Children: How You Can Protect Your Child," on Wednesday, March 6. It will be held at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola. Parking and the entrance are at the rear of the building.

Anthony J. Battista, MD, attending pediatrician at Winthrop, will discuss how you can talk to your children about the potential hazards of the Internet, while helping them to enjoy its many fun and educational aspects. His lecture will include guidelines for safety, privacy issues and parental controls. A question and answer period will follow.

Spring is the traditional time of the year that many reseed their lawns.

Cornell Cooperative Extension has a wealth of information not only about the right seed but also regarding lawn maintenance.

Grasses are sun loving plants and as a general rule need at least four hours of direct sun a day. (Six hours if located in a highly trafficked area.) However, there is a grass that will grow in shady areas. The following will assist you when buying grass seed:

Old Bethpage Village will present from noon to 4 p.m., Irish-American music on March 10 and March 17. Jigs, reels, and songs such as The Minstrel Boy, Kathleen Mavourneen, etc. will be featured.

Your son will be graduating from high school in June. But, is he ready for freshman year in college? Preparing a young man for college involves more than choosing the right school or personal supplies. It also involves preparing him for the challenges he will experience as he takes this exciting step toward independence. In an effort to help fathers and sons prepare for the various issues they may face, Winthrop-University Hospital's Men's Health Services will host a dinner and panel discussion, "Surviving Freshman Year... Fathers and Sons" on Tuesday, March 12. It will be held at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola. The fee is $15 per person and includes dinner.

Ronald Marino, DO, associate chairman, Department of Pediatrics and William Bryson-Brockmann, PhD, chief of Behavioral Pediatrics at Winthrop, will discuss topics geared toward the college-aged student, including making smart choices, relationships, healthy living, time management and self-esteem.

Participants will be eligible to apply for a $1,000 scholarship. For more information regarding this scholarship and to make a reservation, please call 1-866-WINTHROP by March 5.

One eligible graduating senior from every participating New York State public and private high school will be awarded a $4,000 four year college scholarship which is paid in $1,000 annual payments.

These scholarships can only be used toward the cost of attendance at a New York State accredited college, university, community college or trade school.
