The trio of Mineola High School bowlers earned spots in the Nassau County individual tournament. Senior Christina Schulze and Junior Jennifer Pirrone will represent the girls bowling team while eighth grader Anthony Tretolo survived in the boys competition.

Coach Valerie Liese's Lady Mustangs placed sixth in the county tournament, moving from 11th to 4th before the final game. Schulze's high game for the tournament was 216. Senior Lauren Anderson bowled a 206 and finished with a 162 average. Pirrone bowled a 186 and finished with a 163 average. Senior Lauren Landy, junior Diana Crowe and freshman Jennifer Boyle also competed in the county tournament and enabled Mineola to attain its 6th place finish.

Meanwhile, the Mineola boys bowling team entered the county tournament seeded 15th. Mineola didn't even make the post season a year ago. But, the Mustangs finished the day 13th, led by Tretolo, who earned all-county designation with his 209 average and a 238 high game for the day. Other high scorers in the tournament included sophomore Vito Errico with a 223, senior Jeff Tavares with a 197, senior Bryan Gallucci with a 193, senior Tom Aupied with a 185, junior Joe Tiseo with a 187, and sophomore Peter Marson bowled a 157 high game. Coach Helms Bohringer said, "The boys should be proud of their accomplishments this year. They finished the regular season in fourth place. But, in the county tournament, we defeated both Sewanhaka and Great Neck South, which finished the regular season ahead of us in the league. We also defeated Bethpage, which was ranked third going into the tournament."

In addition to Tretolo earning all-county, all league selections went to Errico, Gallucci and Aupied. Tavares, Tiseo, Marson, along with senior Brian Saks and junior Mike Antoniou also helped the squad achieve its goal of reaching the county tournament.

When last we visited Mineola's track team, reinvented after more than two decades, the Mustangs were giving a good account of themselves in the conference championship meet, especially for a first year program. Mineola did better than expected. Nine athletes have qualified for the county championships. From the girls unit, junior Beth Basile will run in the 55 yard dash while freshman Juliet Barber will compete in the 600 meter and freshman Nicole Lapin will be in the high jump. From the boys squad, freshman Tim Palma made the county championships in the 600. He's joined by sophomore Joe Stigliano in the high jump, while senior Trumainn Thurmond will compete in both the 55 and 300. The 4X400 meter relay team also qualified, which also gives Dan Guido, David Rivera and Anthony Wong the opportunity to run in the county meet.
