The Fifth Graders from Corpus Christi Parish played their finest game of the year last Sunday en route to a 44-16 victory over crosstown rival St. Aidan. The boys showed a well balanced offense and stifling defense to improve their record to 6-3. The team is currently in third place behind Notre Dame and St. Peter's - two of the three blemishes on their set. The boys have three games remaining including a rematch with St. Peter's on February 10 which could determine playoff seeding

As was the case the week before, the crew jumped to a high scoring start with 15 first quarter points. Assistant Coach Tom Winters instituted two five man units engaged to change "on the fly" and it worked to perfection. Mike Fox and Joe Purcell had ten points in the early rally. The game was dominated by unselfishness as Purcell plated a pair of assists along with Dan Gouveia and Alex Ward. The team continued its aggression and managed a 26-11 halftime bulge with all players contributing.

The third quarter may have been the most influential seven minutes this group plays all year. Defensive pressure held the opposition to one point behind two blocks from Cooper Camby and steals from Keith Medina, Ward and Fox. Endre Cooper had five rebounds to match his six points along with another strong glass showing from his cousin with 14 boards. Multiple personnel ran the offense and scoring came from varied sources including Tim Goncalves, Gouveia, and TJ Winters in his first extended action back from the disabled list. Tommy McKeever did not break the scoring column despite numerous chances but managed two rebounds in the contest. For the fourth quarter, the team concentrated on their passing game and honed their skills for the final upcoming battles of the season. The team missed the intensity of forward Bryan Vesley who has been sent to the sideline for the remainder of the year with a fractured bone in his foot.

The final game of the season is on the road at Our Lady of Victory in the final day of the schedule. The team hopes to move on to the divisional playoffs in March and is looking for scrimmage games in the interim. Interested parties should contact either Mike Falotico at 873-1926 or Tom Winters at 747-7662.
