The Mineola Junior Fire Department is holding its Sixth Annual Pasta Dinner on Feb. 3 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Community Center, 155 Washington Avenue. If you would like more information or tickets please call 747-5810 or 746-6583.

Senator Michael Balboni encourages all students in grades 1- 8 to enter the I-Ma-Green-Nation Competition. The goal of this program is to develop an awareness of the environment and in particular, the importance of recycling and waste reduction.

The Village Offices will be closed on Tuesday, Feb. 12, and Monday, Feb. 18. However, there will be regular garbage collection on both of these days. The Nimble Fingers Quilters have decorated one of the display cases in the foyer of 155 Washington Avenue. It is worth a trip to see the quality of the articles in the display case.

Before the opening of the Whitestone and Throgs Neck Bridges there was a ferry service from Oyster Bay to Greenwich, Conneticut.

Give yourself a gift in time for Valentine's Day-learn what you can do to help maintain a healthy heart. A part of Perspectives in Health community education series, Winthrop-University will present a free lecture, "Love Your Heart: Prevention & Treatment of Coronary artery disease" on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002. The program will begin with registration at 6:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 7. It will be held at Winthrop's Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Blvd. in Mineola. Parking and the entrance are located in the rear of the building.

Steven Zeldis, MD, Attending Cardiologist at Winthrop, will discuss risk factors for heart disease and provide information on reducing your risk through a healthy lifestyle. He will also include a discussion of some of the more recent treatment advances. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.

Accidents all to often occur in our homes. The bathroom is an area where falls occur. To minimize bathroom accidents, please consider the following:

* Do not use any electrical device (hair dryer, electric razor, etc.) while still wet from the shower or bath, , or if you are standing on a wet floor.

* Use non-skid rugs or mats.

* Equip bathtubs and showers with non-skid mats and/or abrasive strips.

* Install one secure grab bar.

There are a wide variety of autoimmune diseases affecting women today. Although chronic, early diagnosis and treatment can help keep these disorders under control. To learn more about autoimmune disease, women can attend a free lecture sponsored by Winthrop-University Hospital's Women's Health Forum, "The Faces of Autoimmune Disease" on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The program will begin with registration at 6:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 7. It will be held at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Blvd. in Mineola. Parking and the entrance are located at the rear of the building.

Elise Belilos, MD, Director of Women's Health Program in Rheumatology at Winthrop, will focus on a wide spectrum of autoimmune disease and explain the differences between some disorders. She will highlight some of the more common conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, among others, as well as available treatments.
