This is the last week for registering for the winter session of Senior Recreation. If you would like more information or like to enroll in these programs, please call Kyle Teemsma at 746-0753.

Registration has begun for a "Skin Care & Make-up Clinic" that is being offered by the village. The "Clinic" will be held on two consecutive Mondays, Feb. 4 and 11, from

12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Community Center, 155 Washington Avenue in Mineola. The cost for this course will be $35 which includes the cost of materials. Please call Kyle at 746-0753 to have a registration form sent to you.

County Seat Kiwanis will be holding its Annual Super Bowl Pancake Breakfast at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 186 Jericho Turnpike in Mineola, on Feb. 3 from 8 a.m. to noon. The costs are: $6 for adults and $4 for seniors and children 12 and under. After you enjoy the County seat Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast you are welcomed to attend the Mineola Jr. Fire Department's "Pasta Dinner" which will be held on Sunday, Feb. 3, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Community Center, 155 Washington Avenue. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and children.
The Swimming and Diving Center is located at Eisenhower Park. The Daily Admission Fee per its website (www.co.nassau.ny.us/pool.) is as follows:

You need a Nassau County "Leisure Passport" to obtain the resident rate.

Asthma sufferers can learn to take control of their asthma through "Asthma 101", an adult asthma education course being offered by Winthrop-University Hospital's Asthma Center. The program is perfect for a person who has been newly diagnosed or whose asthma is out of control. The course is taught by registered nurses and respiratory therapists with years of clinical experience in asthma management. It will be held on Feb.13, 20 and 27, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., at 222 Station Plaza North in Mineola, Suite 400. The course fee is $25.

Participants will receive individualized instruction in a small group setting, an asthma workbook, a peak flow meter, and instruction on how to use inhaled medication. There will also be an opportunity to meet and share feelings with other asthmatics. Parents of asthmatic children are welcome.

In 1920 the population of Nassau County was 76, 120. It was tabulated in two categories i.e.: Urban-42,993 and Rural-33,127. Today the population of Nassau County is greater than that of four states. Laura Ingalls took off from Roosevelt Field, on Oct.5, 1930 on a solo transcontinental flight. She made nine stops and landed in California on Oct. 9. This flight took 30 hours and 27 minutes.

Alfred Ely Beach in February 1870 opened for public use, a subway between Warren and Murray Streets.

The station was equipped with a grand piano, chandeliers and a goldfish-stocked fountain.

Four hundred thousand visitors paid 25 cents to enjoy the block-long ride in its first year of operation.

Adolescence can be a wonderful experience, filled with self-growth and discovery as a young girl searches for independence. But it often creates conflict within a family. Parents and daughters can learn to understand this transitional period and grow together by attending a free lecture sponsored by Winthrop-University Hospital's Parenting Today Program, "Surviving Adolescence Together...

Parents and Daughters" on Thursday, Feb. 7. The program will begin with registration at 6:30 p.m. followed by the lecture at 7. It will be held at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard in Mineola, at the corner of Second Street. Parking and the entrance are located at the rear of the building.

Elana Kastner, MD, Faculty Physician, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Winthrop, Jane Swedler, MD, Chief, Adolescent Medicine at Winthrop, and Sandra Wolkoff, CSW, North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center, will present a variety of topics geared towards young women. They will focus on the choices young women face, the pressure to succeed and the role of the parent during this transitional time. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.
