Recently, I was taken ill and my wife Grace had to call the Mineola Ambulance Service. They were at our home in less than 10 minutes and we thank them for their wonderful service. We also want to thank our good neighbors, Gavin Duffy, who drove Grace to the hospital, and Peter Smith who drove us home.

Alice Gomes of Arlington St., that lady who travels alone almost everywhere, was visiting her daughter in New Hampshire when she skidded on some ice and slammed her car into a huge rock. The car was totaled but luckily Alice survived and was only badly shaken up. Traveling without a credit card she was unable to rent a car so her son-in-law drove her home.

A man we go way back with is Bill Pokorny of Barwick Blvd. Bill came to us 50 years ago and promised to help our just born Mineola American anyway he could. Bill organized a route of carrier boys and became our circulation manager. Throughout all these many years he has promoted the newspaper any way he could. Bill is active in the Mineola Fire Dept. and worked for the LIRR during his career. He now conducts private tours for senior citizens. His wife Ruth also worked for the Mineola American assisting the business manager.

Fifty years ago, Tom Flynn came to our door and asked if he could write a sports column for the paper. We said OK and figured it would last about two weeks but no. Tom wrote his column for us for a period of 40 years, week in and week out without ever missing an issue. Tom has been active in every sport in Mineola over the years. He is a credit to the village. Once Tom wrote something that some people didn't like. A man wrote a letter and said that Tom and I should stand in front of the village hall and issue a public apology. The letter was signed "a friend." Tom and I have been laughing about it ever since. We still haven't gotten around to issuing that apology.
