Demolition is expected to begin next month on the old Willis Avenue School so that construction can begin on the new one sometime in the spring.
The area, which is fenced off, on Willis Avenue has already seen some of the work required to construct the new building. All asbestos abatement is complete as is lead abatement. Building demolition should begin sometime in the second week of February and could be completed in April. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring.
Once the demolition is completed, the oil tank will be removed from the site. Demolition is expected to take over two months because of the location of the building. Because it is situated adjacent to a residential area, the Mineola School District decided to have the building taken down in parts.
