Corpus Christi held its 2nd annual holiday tournament over the Christmas break. It was an exciting week of basketball that culminated with three thrilling championship games this past Saturday. The first game saw cross-town rivals Corpus Christi and St. Aidan's square off in the 6th grade "C" Division. St. Aidans received a bye in qualifying for the finals (due to its 5-0 record), while Corpus Christi, entering the tournament, was a much improved 4-1 under coach Mike Fragiacomo. Corpus Christi defeated Our Lady of Hope to get into the championship, which proved to be a seesaw game with one of the highlights coming at the end of the first quarter when Kyle Cribbin hit a running one-handed shot as she was fouled. He stood alone on the court as he completed the three-point play. St. Aidans proved to be too much though as the well coached team under Chris Savigne held on for a 29-25 win.
The second game of the championship saw Corpus Christi take on Our Lady of Hope in the 6th grade "B" phase of the tournament. Both of these teams have a lot in common, as they both moved up this year to the CYO Nassau/Suffolk "B" Division and they have been competitive thus far. Corpus Christi lost by just a point to St. Joseph's before Christmas. Both Corpus Christi and Our Lady of Hope beat two different teams from St. Mary's of Manhasset to reach the finals. It is not surprising that this would be such a close fought battle with each team never leading by more than six points.
Our Lady of Lords held leads of 12-10 and 18-16 at the ends of the first quarter and halftime respectively. But, Corpus Christi had a big third quarter and took a 30-24 lead going into the fourth. Corpus Christi held on for a 38-32 win for a second consecutive Holiday Tournament championship.
The last of the finals saw two Our Lady of Hope teams playing for the championship of the 7th grade. One of the teams defeated Corpus Christi as coach John Reedy had his boys playing hard, but were unable to come up with a victory.. The other Our Lady of Hope team defeated St. Aidans to send themselves to the intra school finals.
Lastly, many thanks to Father Bob Batule, referee John Reed, who officiated all the games, and the ladies who volunteered their time at the snack stand, including Heather and Kimmy, as well as all those who made the event a success.
