On Nov. 16 and 17, Mineola High School students went on an Outward Bound Physical Education trip that they will never forget. The students and their chaperones went to the Peec Environmental Center in Pennsylvania. Everyone slept in comfortable beds inside warm cabins. There could not have been better weather during the trip.
Throughout the weekend the students pushed themselves to the extreme as they participated in numerous activities including the Olympic sports, Orienteering. The sport involves using a map and a compass to find your way around a specific area. The students traveled in the woods going to various checkpoints and eventually coming back to where they started. A group leader from the environmental center took all of the students on a long night hike deep into the woods. The guide told stories and kept all the students entertained.
The last event of the weekend included hiking up a small mountain named Mount Tammany. The small mountain is located right off of the Appalachian Trail. There are not too many students who can say they have hiked on the Appalachian Trail, which extends from Georgia to Maine. All of the students finished the hike up and down the mountain. Craig Gunder, Danielle Adams and Lauren Anderson flew up and down the mountain in no time at all.
Overall the trip was a great experience for all the students and teachers involved. Everyone learned many new things about themselves and each other. The Outward Bound Physical Education class is looking forward to many other great trips in the future.
