Corpus Christi's fifth grade basketball squad marched to their third victory of the season with a decisive 29-18 thrashing of St. Aloysius on enemy turf in Great Neck on the eighth of December improving its record to 3-1 under Coach Mike Falotico.
Christi continued their trend of quick starts scoring twelve unanswered points in the first half after giving up the first basket of the game. Joe Purcell was a key contributor with four points including two swishing free throws. Camby Cooper matched the feat of his teammate at the foul line and Mike Fox drove his way to two baskets for a 12-6 halftime edge. The third quarter saw an offensive surge by both teams (18 points total). The Mineola contingent was led by Endre Cooper with four points, three rebounds and a steal in his best game of the season. Alex Ward came alive in the period with a pair of field goals to complement three boards and three steals.
This team is so well blended that rotations and combinations are fluid and seamless. Brian Vesley (two points and a steal), Keith Medina (two rebounds) and Tim Goncalves (two rebounds, two steals, assist and block) come off the bench to provide defensive stops at key points. Dan Gouveia is the silent starter providing consistency on both ends of the hardwood with two points and a rebound in this contest. Camby Cooper is dominating the glass as Corpus Christi's "Windex Man" pulling down another dozen rebounds. Mike Fox is Mr. Inside at the point and a terror on the opposite end of the baseline (three steals, two rebounds).
The game was singled out by Falotico as the best team effort he has seen via a balanced scoring column and numerous contributions from every player including currently disabled Captain TJ Winters (broken wing). The Coach is confident in any five he places on the court and knows it will reap dividends as the playoffs surface. General Manager Father Bob is looking forward to March Madness so the pressure will mount on Coach Mike if the success continues.
Following a December 16 matchup with local rival Our Lady of Hope in Carle Place, the team takes a Holiday sabbatical until a rematch with the Notre Dame Deuces on January 2 and another brief respite through January 13 when the boys face St. Joseph of Garden City at home. .
