The Mineola All Stars boys' soccer team's perfect record ended October 27,2001 in a 2-0 loss with Bayside Fire. Our defensive line headed by Carlos Barros in goal, along with Jim Murtha, Kevin McCann and Alex Ward kept the ball from penetrating our net for most of the game. Our midfielders, Matthew Hevron, Kevin Lopes, Patrick Lupfer, Connor McCann and Christopher McCune, kept the ball up to our offensive line headed by Michael Anes, Helder Cancelinha, Michael Fox and Bryan Vesley. The forwards relentlessly shot the ball on the net, but somehow could not get it into the Bayside Fire's net. The All Stars came close to scoring in exciting offensive drives in both halves, but these efforts did not come to fruition. However, the Bayside Fire team was able to score two by us.
All Stars Regain First Place
Another outstanding effort by all the Mineola All Stars in a 1-0 victory over a tough Franklin Square Strikers team on November 3, 2001. The game was a competitive struggle throughout. A complete team effort in this game created scoring opportunities for Michael Anes, Helder Cancelinha, Michael Fox and Bryan Vesley pushed the offense to the limit. Matthew Hevron, Kevin Lopes, Patrick Lupfer, Anthony Marino, Connor McCann and Christopher McCune, who were awesome in midfield, never backing down, and always in the Strikers way. The first half ended in a scoreless tie. In the second half, after keeping the ball in the Strikers end most of the game, the All Stars offense broke through with the only goal of the game. The All Stars offense scored the team's only goal on a dazzling play through the Franklin Squares Strikers' defense with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Carlos Barros goalie efforts led by great defense from Kevin McCann, Jim Murtha and Alex Ward made a big difference with great defensive tackles, showing both fine skills and ball control, that shutdown the opposing team. The Mineola All Stars won a hard fought offensive battle in Franklin Square. This was a nail biter; parents cheered their kids on from both sides of the field! Mineola All Stars teamwork was in full force.
