There are other locations in our great country which are named Mineola. One of which is Mineola, Texas.
Mineola, Texas was established in the 1840s, chartered in 1873 and "flourished" with the arrival of the railroad in the 1870s. Currently it has a population of approximately 5,000 and is served by the Mineola Fire Department which was organized in 1907. This Department "...protects approximately 8,000 people living in an area of 100 square miles."
Many of our seniors supplement their incomes with the interest that they earn on their Certificates of Deposits. A little more than a year ago they could have received over six percent but the current yields are substantially less.
There is a website, www.savingsbonds.gov,which has detailed information about the different "Savings Bonds" for the public to purchase.
The current yield on I Bonds is 4.40 percent and on EE Bonds is 4.07 percent. Most of us have some knowledge of EE Bonds but few know much about I Bonds.
I Bonds is a "...new type of bond designated for investors seeking to protect the purchasing power of their investments and earn a guaranteed real rate of return." These bonds"...grow in value with inflation indexed earnings for up to 30 years." I encourage you to fully investigate this "investment" before you chose I Bonds or EE Bonds.
For more information please write to: Bureau of the Public Debt, Savings Bond Operations Office, Parkersburg, WV 26106-1328.
Whether you decide to invest in Savings Bonds or Certificates of Deposits it is advisable to purchase these investments in the lowest denomination possible. Instead of having one C/D for $5,000 you should (assuming the rate is the same) have 5 $1,000 C/D's or 10 $500 C/D's.
If for some reason you need money before maturity you can cash in one $500 C/D and not lose the interest on the $4,500 balance.
In 1922 the DailyReview observed that "...In all the villages of this county there was a large registration of school children and not a few of the villages have a serious problem in finding seats for all of those who seek to enter."
"Mineola was a typical community facing such problems and had begun third grades on a part-time basis as early as 1920. By 1923, every grade level was on such a limited schedule despite several school building additions, continued overcrowding caused the school board to purchase four portable classrooms in 1925."
The above appears in Nassau-Suburbia, U.S.A. by Edward J. Smits.
It is currently anticipated that the tree planting program will start in early December. This year's varieties are: Hedgemaple and Chanticleer Pear. Both of these varieties, at maturity, will grow to over 30 feet.
Many of our residents have already contacted the Department of Public Works (DPW) for a tree.
If you would like a tree and as yet, have not contacted DPW please call during business hours 746-0753 to have your address added to the list.
Just a reminder, that there will be no garbage collection on Thanksgiving, Nov. 22.
