The success of the Halloween activities was a result of the hard work of many village employees, volunteers and the sponsors who financed this activity. I greatly appreciate all your efforts and thank you for all of your efforts on behalf of the children of our village.
The Castle Bounce was, for the first time in several years, missing this year. Regretfully, the vehicle transporting the "Castle Bounce" was in an accident.

Aging can bring changes that may weaken our eyesight, however, there are eye diseases and disorders common in older people that can be treated. Seniors and their families can learn about these treatment methods at a free lecture sponsored by Winthrop-University Hospital's Health Update for Seniors program, "The Eye Have It: Treating Eye Problems" on Wednesday, Nov. 14. The program will begin with registration and blood pressure checks at 1:15 p.m., followed by the lecture at 1:45 p.m.. It will be held at the Mineola Community Center, located at 155 Washington Avenue.
Mark Fleckner, MD, attending opthalmologist at Winthrop, will discuss the latest advances in treatment for common eye problems, including glaucoma, cataracts, and eye problems resulting from diabetes. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a question and answer period after the lecture.
Health Update for Seniors and Their Families is coordinated by Geriatric Health Services and RISE (Referral, Information, and Support-services for the Elderly) at Winthrop, part of the Institute for Family Care. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Pre-registration is required. For information and to reserve your space, please call 516-663-3916.
The Board of Trustees will hold a Public Hearing on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue, to receive public comment regarding the following:

1. The gazebo located at Mineola Memorial Park.
2. The building located on the north side of Garfield Ave. west of Marcellus Rd. currently used as the Auxiliary Police Headquarters.
3. The concession stand building located at Wilson Park.
Following the Public Hearing there will be a Public Meeting which is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
Developing positive peer relationships is an important aspect of growing up. Unfortunately, sometimes children have negative experiences as they become the targets of others or have difficulties dealing with social pressures. But, there are strategies parents can teach their children to help them cope with these issues. Parents can learn these strategies at Winthrop-University Hospital's free Parenting Today lecture, "Cliques & Bullies: Your Child Doesn't Have to be a Victim" on Thursday, Nov. 15. The program will begin with registration at 6:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 7 p.m. It will be held at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Boulevard, at the corner of Second Street in Mineola. Parking is available in the rear of the building.
Carmela Granata Bernacchio, MS, SLP-CCC, director of P.A.C.E., will provide strategies children can use to promote positive peer relationships, as well as a discussion of topics such as the hierarchy of social groups, determining the healthiest group for a child, and communicating a problem to a child's school. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.
Parenting Today is coordinated by Children's Health Services and the Department of Pediatrics at Winthrop. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Pre-registration is required. For information and to reserve your space, please call 1-877-559-KIDS.
The Mineola Fire Department is in need of artificial Christmas trees for their "Winter Wonderland" display in the Community Center. Ex-Chief Gary Mazur has informed me that they would appreciate trees of any size that are in good condition.
Please call Kyle at 746-0753 to make arrangements for pick-up.
The Rotary Club of Williston Park will be holding an Art Auction at 8 p.m. on Nov. 8 at the Community Church of East Williston.
There is a donation of $10 per person. The proceeds of the event will be for the benefit of the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital.
For tickets and information please call Nancy Zolezzi at 248-8716.
