The Mineola Mischief faced off against the Manhasset Dragons for the second consecutive week in a U-10 Boys Travel game at Wilson Field. While the outcome may have been the same, the Mischief had to fight through sloppy play and a sluggish attitude to turn away the Dragons by a 2-0 score to stay atop their LIJSL division with an unblemished 4-0 record (6-2-1 overall).
Coach TJ Czubakowski went with the previous week's hot hand in the nets as he rewarded Andre Covas for the squad's second place tournament finish. Covas turned away two shots and was otherwise quiet in an offensively dominated session for the Mischief. Nicholas Ricciardi opened the scoring for Mineola with a slipper at the five minute mark after a pair of missed shots rebounded back to the striker. The Dragon keeper stopped all other advances by the home team as Danny Stagnari and Brendan Maloney kept up the barrage.
The second half returned starting keeper Bryan Lopes to the posts after a week on the disabled list. Lopes showed no rust but was untested with only two chances and preserved what would become the second shutout of the season. The Dragons could not generate any momentum against the strong defensive play of Nicky Franzini. Midfielders Frankie Teixeira and Andrew Ines established the Mischief edge into the offensive zone before the team could add some insurance. TJ Winters increased the Mischief lead with a one timer at ten minutes after misbooting a pair of shots. Michael Castellana tested the Dragon defense with five shots in the second half and a near bicycle kick for a goal as the clock ticked down. The Mischief had multiple opportunities brought to the table by James Pastoressa and Danny McAree but could not find the finishing touch to put the game away. Forward Scotty Mogavero and Defenseman Theo Czubakowski had their contributions muted by a much improved Manhasset group which had been dominated by a 5-0 blanking the week before.
The Mischief returned to action in a home match against the Port Washington Xtreme on October 27 at 1:10 p.m. Their final two regular season games are road contests versus cross town rival Albertson Assault on November 3 at 9:00 a.m. and Jericho Tigers at 10:30 a.m. on November 10. Seats for all games are first come first served and are available for the nominal fee of zilch at the gate on the day of the game.
