Village Offices will be closed on Monday, Nov. 12, in observance of Veterans Day. There will be, however, regular garbage and compost collection on this day.

Leaf removal season will officially begin on Monday, Nov. 5. Residents are reminded that loose leaves should be kept separate from household waste and should be placed in plastic bags at the curb for collection. The Sanitation Department will collect leaf bags on Mondays and on each refuse collection day. There is a 10 bag limit for each collection day.

The Highway Department leaf removal crews will also begin making their way through our streets following the street sweeper routes. Please do not rake leaves into the street because it slows the crews attempting to clean our streets. In addition, placing leaves in the street creates a potential fire hazard for parked vehicles, and also creates a flood hazard by clogging our drainage basins during periods of rain.

With the abundance of trees in our village, fallen leaves are plentiful. Every effort will be made to service your area as quickly as possible, however, as the volume increases, there will be times the crews will be unable to complete each route each day. If this occurs, the crews will begin where they left off on the previous day.

If you have any questions regarding leaf season, please call the Department of Public Works at 746-0753.

Colon cancer is the third most common malignancy diagnosed in women. With early detection, the five-year survival rate can be 90 percent, yet after the disease spreads, the survival rate usually drops significantly. That's why it's important for women to learn the facts about colon cancer. Women can learn more about the disease at Winthrop-University Hospital's Women's Health Forum free lecture, "Colon Cancer Screening...a Women's Issue, Too!" on Wednesday, Nov. 14. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 7. It will be held at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, located at 101 Mineola Blvd., at the corner of Second Street in Mineola. Parking is available in the rear of the building.

Bonnie Pollack, MD, attending physician in Gastroenterology at Winthrop, will provide a general overview of colon cancer, as well as discuss the latest technological advances in screening. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer period.

Admission is free, but seating is limited. For information and to make a reservation, please call 1-888-53-WOMEN.
