The Mineola Mischief continued their success on the weekend of September 29 with a divisional win over the Great Neck Thunder by a score of 2-1. The Boys U-10 travel squad also competed in their first State Cup contest against neighboring rivals, the Garden City Fire. The Mischief is currently atop LIJSL Division NN with a 3-0 record and a perfect nine point total.
The Thunder (0-3) provided an early challenge when the Mischief got off to a sluggish start. Sloppy play and careless chances dominated the majority of the first half and kept the Thunder on the offensive. Mineola's alarm clock sounded at the 22 minute mark when TJ "Kangaroo" Winters took an advance from Danny 'Happy Feet" Stagnari for the game's first goal. The lead woke up the team with long range chances coming from Andrew "You Have To Be In It To" Ines and Andre "Cobra" Covas. Coaches Liam Wachter and TJ "No Vowels" Czubakowski added new combinations to the lineup keeping all the players focused and competitive in their toughest game to date.
The teams traded sprints in the second half with few serious attempts on net. Great Neck peppered the Mineola posts with wide shots and high boots leading goalkeeper Bryan "Quick Hands" Lopes' save total to a modest 8. An unfortunate take down outside the 18 yard box by a Mineola defender led to the only penalty kick of the game. The Thunder converted the miscue into the left corner tieing the match midway through the period. A defensive substitution to Frankie Teixera gave new life to an inspired Mischief. Michael "Not In My" Castellana drilled a point blank rocket 17 minutes in to knock the Thunder goalkeeper just shy of the goal line. Three minutes later Nicky "Rickety" Ricciardi broke downfield feeding a perfect cross to a streaking Winters into a wide open net for the game winning goal. The game was a culmination of efforts by the entire 14 boy roster including James "Pistol" Pastoressa, Danny "Determined' McAree and Theodore Roosevelt Czubakowski.
The Mischief returned the following day to face Garden City in State Cup Tournament action. Played in a constant downpour, the boys witnessed a disciplined squad despite the miserable conditions. Early in the first half, the Mischief turned away a barrage of shors behind tremendous stops by Keeper Bryan Lopes and Defensemen Danny Stagnari and Nicky "IceMan" Franzini. At the midpoint, the Fire took a 1-0 lead via their triangle attack. Garden City added to their advantage early in the second half with a goal at the six minute mark. The Mischief's Scotty "Scooter" Mogavero and Brendan "Baloney" Maloney had two excellent chances apiece to cut the deficit but an aggressive Fire goalie would not relent. The Mischief turned to an offensive strategy as the game unfolded and the Fire took advantage of perfect positioning to close out the score at 5-0.
The Mischief will use the Columbus Day break to play in the annual North Hempstead Cup Tournament on their home facilities before returning to LIJSL divisional games against the Manhasset Dragons on October 13 at 3:30 p.m. at Wilson Field.
