The Mineola Mischief gained their second victory of the season with a dominant performance over the North Shore Storm at Wilson Field on September 22. The U-10 Boys avenged an earlier 7-0 shellacking with a 5-2 pasting in the third week of the LIJSL season. The sanctioning body followed precedent and postponed the prior week's schedule due to current events. The Mischief put the vacation to good use.
The Mischief controlled this match from the outset. Danny "The Sniper" McAree lit the scoreboard in the third minute with a booming 40 yard goal off a header from Nicky "Knockin' Noggin" Franzini. Four minutes later, the Mischievous Midgets added to their lead when Nicky "Rocket" Ricciardi converted a pass from Scotty "The Snake" Mogavero. North Shore tightened up the game before the half with a score at the 15 minute mark. Bryan "Hands Off" Lopes was solid in the nets for the Mineolans with nine critical saves in the first twenty-five minutes and eighteen for the game.
The teams played aggressive as the second half unfolded feeding the Mischief agenda. Keeping the pressure on in the offensive zone, defenseman turned forward Mike Castellana slammed a rebound off a Ricciardi miss into a 3-1 advantage. The teams stayed even until an unfortunate Storm hand ball in the box at the tenth minute. Coach TJ Czubakowski turned to McAree for the penalty kick and was not disappointed. McAree nailed the left hand corner for his third goal on three shots in two games.
The Storm turned to a no defense format to try and get back into the 4-1 game. A flurry caused the entire Mischief roster to contribute. Frankie Teixera turned a tremendous kick save in front of the goal while Brendan Maloney kept bodying the Storm at the sidelines. James "Pesty' Pastoressa got underneath the skin of the Storm to release the ball to his teammates. Danny "StunGun" Stagnari and Andrew "The Flea" Ines made their defensive presence felt without fanfare. Andre Covas maintained the mix and Theodore Czubakowski aimed key clearing balls over midfield.
The Mischief made the most of final opportunities at the 15 minute mark. TJ Winters snipped home a neat touch pass from Mogavero, both natural right footers using their left legs, for the final tally of the day for the locals. As time expired, the Storm scored a meaningless goal to complete the final score at 5-2. The Mischief are now atop their division at 2-0 for the 2001 season. They return to tournament play on the October 6 weekend with a State Cup contest at home on Sunday at 1:20 p.m. at Wilson Field.
