Mineola Red Heat, the boys U-15 travel soccer team, played the third scheduled game of their fall season against the Rosedale All Stars on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001. The second game was postponed due to the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Out of respect for the people who lost their lives in this attack and to honor the rescue workers involved in the recovery, the game was preceded by a moment of silence with all players, coaches and referees lined up in the middle of the field.
The Rosedale team was only able to field the legally allowable minimum of 7 players for the game. Despite this disadvantage, the Rosedale team gave Mineola a run for their money. Despite several attempts, no score was made by either team until Mineola forward, Helder Mendes, surprised the Rosedale goalie with a perfectly placed instep kick bringing Mineola into the lead 1 - 0. At 19:29 Rosedale struck back with a twisting shot aimed high at the Mineola net that goalie Kevin Franciotti couldn't get under control. The game was tied at 1 - 1 until Helder Mendes, assisted by Fabio De Oliviera and Chris Concalves scored his second goal. The first half ended with Mineola in the lead 2 - 1.
With only 1:30 in the second half Anderson Osorio took advantage of the fact that Rosedale's goalie was out of place and scored, widening Mineola's lead to 3 - 1. At 12:02 Fabio DeOliviera scored again giving Mineola a 4 - 1 lead over Rosedale. A Rosedale player was injured during that final play and had to be sidelined. The game was called in Mineola's favor shortly after that, due to the Rosedale's inability to field the required minimum of 7 players.
In the second week of their season, Mineola Red Heat's record is 1 win, 1 Loss and no ties.
