Taking the 90-minute round trip ferry from Orient Point to New London can be a rewarding experience. New London is a deep water port with its own airport. It's famous for the manufacturing of submarines and is the site of Connecticut College and the US Coast Guard Academy. The city is also the home of a submarine base. During the Revolutionary War, New London was attacked and burned by the British in 1781. The British were led by the turncoat General Benedict Arnold.

Everyone at Corpus Christi Church is hoping that Bishop Murphy will name Father Robert Batule the new pastor. Dedicated, incisive and brimming over with enthusiastic new ideas, his warm and friendly manner has made him immensely popular.

Margaret Fleming has been working at the county offices for many years. Margaret and her brother John of Woodnut Place were big fans of Mahoneys Restaurant and are hoping that another good dining place will be soon taking over.

Marilyn Donnellan of White Road tells us that her husband, Dan, is improving.

Jean Metzler of Williston Park, formerly of Shortridge Drive, is a graduate of St Aidans and St. Mary's HS. It was good chatting with her at the Jericho Diner.

Pat Tobin of Royal Avenue, who works for the Town of NH, stops by our office several times a week. He has saved all the old copies of the Mineola American and loves to reread the old editorials to see how prophetic we were. Believe it or not, we were actually wrong sometimes.

Luckily, we have only a family of five geese making a home at Memorial Park. The stretch of land on Herricks Road on the Garden City Park side has hundreds of the birds.

Candy Maia of Mineola Boulevard likes to have her morning coffee and cake at Portugalia Bakery.

Sorry to hear of the death of Jerry Ryan of Westbury Avenue. Jerry, who once planned to be a priest, was that Lay Reader with the powerful voice at Corpus Christi Church. Years ago he wrote a column for the old Brooklyn Tablet. He also tried his hand as a standup comedian. One of the highlights of his life was when his children treated him to a trip to his ancestral home, Ireland.

Andy Ceriello, owner of the famous food chain, enjoyed a brief holiday in England.

Cathy Chaillol is a customer of Janbels Beauty Salon on Westbury Avenue. Her husband Marcel is the Grand Knight of the K of C.

Faust and Maryann Guarino of Oceanside visited the Railroad Museum in Riverhead. Faust is a big fan of old trains. While at the museum they met Jack Hehman, president of the Mineola Historical Society. Maryann is formerly of Mineola.

John Consenza of Wisteria Avenue, his daughter Teresa and grandson Timothy, dined at the Soundview Inn in Greenport. John is a Eucharistic Minister at Corpus Christi.

Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island has some wonderful nature trails to explore.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gumm and son Freddie dined at Eleanor Rigbys.

Village Justice John O'Shea reports that 3,789 parking tickets were issued in July.
