When you meet Ed Hajdak of Emory Road around town, he is always busy talking about his grandchildren and showing everyone their pictures.

Ed Paley of Mineola Youth and Family Services enjoyed dinner at Eleanor Rigbys.

Lynn and Bob Betz live on Royal Avenue and are neighbors of Joe and Catherine Mannix. When we met Lynn and Bob they were with Dorothy Armstrong, who is Joe's aide and lives with the family. Dorothy must be doing something right, because every time we see Joe he always looks so good either walking with Dorothy around the neighborhood or in church. Joe also has such a wonderful spirit in spite of his illness.

Came across Julia Ricca of White Road, who was shopping in a local supermarket. Julia and I always have a few words to say in the Spanish language.

Tony Antoniou of Carle Place was shopping at Waldbaum's recently where we met. Tony, who works for Anton newspapers, does not own Anton's despite the similarity in names. Tony actually is the man who keeps everything in tiptop shape at our newspaper plant. Tony lives with his wife, Anastasia, and children Mike and Liz.

Former Mineola baker Walter Weismantel and his wife, Grace, had lunch with their daughter Sandy in the room at Tappan where British Major John Andre awaited his execution. American General Benedict Arnold led the American invasion of Canada, which penetrated all the way to Quebec City. Arnold was the chief strategist in the victory at Saratoga, even though others were given most of the credit. Embittered, he entered into secret negotiations with British General John Clinton to surrender West Point to the enemy. Andre acted as the go-between and had the plans of the Point stuffed in his boot. Unfortunately for him, he returned to the British lines dressed as a civilian and thus was hung as a spy.

Charlie and Helen Melvin lunched at Milleridge Inn.

Like his dad, John Paul Macedo is an active reader. Met him at the library a couple of times.

Also at the same spot we met Luann Scribani and son Philip. She and her husband live on Burkhard Avenue and are active in the Bahaí Community. This summer the family vacationed in Lancaster visiting the Amish country.

Police Officers Jim Quigley and Dawn Milano had coffee at the Jericho Diner. Jim, who used to be with the 3rd, is now at Police Headquarters in the Pistol Licensing Office.

Mayor John Colbert and wife Eleanor enjoyed a summer cruise to Canada, hitting Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

* * * *

Deputy Mayor Lou Santosus and wife Pat took a special lighthouse cruise from Orient Point. They visited all the surrounding beacons, including Plum Island, Gull Island, Horton Point and even Block Island. This is an all-day trip with lunch served on board.

Janbel Beauty Salon, is ath on Westbury Avenue. Among her happy customers is Maria Grilo. She and her husband Joe live on Wellington Road.

Popular Jim Agnew is just back from Ireland where he has many business interests in and round Dublin. The most important reason for the trip was to visit his mom Mary and help her celebrate her 93rd birthday.

Bill D'Avanzo, son Bill Jr. and daughter-in-law Nancy ate lunch at our favorite diner.

* * * *

Kathy and John Dougherty of Beebe Road welcomed the birth of their 13th child, a boy.

* * * *

Andy Gonzalez, caretaker in Memorial Park, is doing a good job. He and his wife Luz live with their children Omar, Lourdes and Yolanda on Willis Avenue.
