Mineola has been called the "Cradle of Aviation" since the aviation pioneers made history on the nearby Hempstead Plains. The pilots who made Mineola their "base" are names out of our country's aeronautical history: The Wright Brothers; Igor Sikorsky; Captain Rene Fonack; Admiral Richard Byrd and Charles Lindbergh.

Lindberg took off on May 20, 1927 to make history by making the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in his plane, The Spirit of St. Louis. He arrived in Paris, France 33 hours after take off.

The May 20, 1927 edition of The Long Island Daily Press reported on this event; "Flying alone and carrying only sandwiches, a few chocolate bars and some distilled water, Lindbergh departed in misty weather. The "Flying Fool" traveled nine tenths of a mile before his plane rose from the ground. He flew very low and passed out of sight of the thousands of watchers at the field at an altitude of only 200 feet."
