On Saturday, July 21, the Mineola Mavericks, sponsored by Windsor Fuel Oil, took on Port Washington in the first game played in the Glen Cove Tournament. The first inning is when most of the action took place. Mineola had the home position, so Port was first up at bat scoring two runs. Mineola stepped up to the plate and Nelson Lopes started it all off with a base hit. The hits kept coming and by the end of the first inning, runs were scored by Lopes, Anthony Plomitallo, Anthony Orsano, Joe Bittner, Pete Diglio, Chris Harnett and Max Bankin for the early lead. Orsano was the pitcher on the mound and closed down the second and third innings for Port with no problem. Fly Pops were all caught by Orsano, Bittner and John Cloghessy.

Bottom of the third, the Mavericks picked up two more runs from Diglio and Harnett. Port had some action after the second out in the fourth inning, but Orsano fielded a ground ball and Cloghessy made the out at first base before any runners could score. The Mavericks picked up another run by Tiago Rodriques in the fourth. Port scored in the sixth and seventh, but the Mavericks stayed well ahead and took a well-earned win 10 - 4.

Monday, July 23, the Mavericks faced off against Glen Cove. Chris Hartnett was on the mound and Anthony Orsano was catching. GC scored a run in the first, but defenses were strong. Orsano sent the ball to Plomitallo at second to take the runner out on a steal and Plomitallo fielded a grounder sending it to John Rovegno for another out at second. Bittner and Plomitallo were brought home in the second thanks to a double, hit by Harnett. At the top of the third, Rovegno caught a fly pop and Lopes, at third, threw the ball to Orsano for an out at home plate. Later, Rovegno scored in the bottom of that inning. In the fourth, Lopes was pitching and DeKanchuk caught an infield fly pop. Cloghessy picked up a grounder in right field, sent it to Lopes who sent it to Orsano for the out at home plate. WOW! Cloghessy scored a run in the fifth. DeKanchuk took the mound in the sixth. There was a base hit to first and an error made there, but DeKanchuk ran to first, caught the ball and made the out despite being plowed down by the runner. Harnett scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and then the game was called for time (11 p.m.) That was unfortunate because the boys took the loss, 10-6, and who knows what could have happened in that last inning?

On Tuesday, July 24, the Mavericks met Westbury at Wilson Field. Although Mineola took a loss here, it must be noted that the opposing team was loaded with power hitters, but the Mavericks played remarkable defense with very few errors. DeKanchuk was the starting pitcher and picked up a grounder to the mound passing it to Bankin (catching) for an out at home plate. Strein took the mound in the third and DeKanchuk caught a huge pop fly to center and passed it up to second baseman Orsano for the double play (no tag up). In the sixth inning, a grounder picked up by Rodrigues was thrown home for that out (DeKanchuk now the catcher) and then thrown over to first and Orsano to take out that runner. Fly pops were caught all night and the Mavericks did make three runs. Cloghessy and Harnett both came in as a result of action at the plate by Bankin and Lopes came in, in the sixth.
