Mineola Man, 86, Killed on Jericho
An 86-year-old resident of an apartment building on Horton Highway was killed last week when he was struck by a minivan at 9:40 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24 as he attempted to cross Jericho Turnpike at Sagamore Avenue after buying groceries at King Kullen, police said.

Mustang Run Makes Contribution to MVAC
The purpose of the annual Mineola Mustang Run is to raise money for various organizations that benefit the community through a 5K run/walk that has become Mineola's biggest fund raiser. The Mineola Mustang Run Committee has apparently already found a worthy cause to donate the proceeds that will be earned during this November's run.

On Saturday, July 21, the Mineola Mavericks, sponsored by Windsor Fuel Oil, took on Port Washington in the first game played in the Glen Cove Tournament. The first inning is when most of the action took place. Mineola had the home position, so Port was first up at bat scoring two runs. Mineola stepped up to the plate and Nelson Lopes started it all off with a base hit. The hits kept coming and by the end of the first inning, runs were scored by Lopes, Anthony Plomitallo, Anthony Orsano, Joe Bittner, Pete Diglio, Chris Harnett and Max Bankin for the early lead. Orsano was the pitcher on the mound and closed down the second and third innings for Port with no problem. Fly Pops were all caught by Orsano, Bittner and John Cloghessy.

State LL Championships Begin with No-No
The New York State 11-12 Year-Old Little League Championships began Saturday in Mineola with four teams vying for the right to be called state champions and take the next step in a journey that's ultimate destination is the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.
