The Mineola Mavericks (13-year-old travel) sponsored by Windsor Fuel Oil played game one in the Hicksville Tournament League on July 6 under the lights at Wilson Field against Freeport. The team has a few new names on the roster. Anthony Orsano, Anthony Plumbatello and Tiago Rodriguez are the new draftees. At the top of the second inning, Freeport was leading three to one, and then the Mavericks took off. In the bottom of the second inning seven players were walked giving new meaning to "good eye." Joe Bittner hit a triple that brought in three runs and we closed that inning 10 to 3 with runs scored by most of the team. Freeport retired their pitcher. No action in the third inning. In the fourth inning, Freeport was shut down easily by Anthony Orsano. The first batter was struck out but tried to steal first on a catcher's error, but was tagged out at first by Pete Diglio. The second out was a fly pop to the pitcher's mound and the third out was a ground ball to center picked up by Nelson Lopes and thrown to first for the third out. Freeport picked up five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Nelson Lopes was walked in the sixth and moved forward by a base hit made by Tiago Rodriguez who advanced to second on an error at first. Both men were brought home by base hits made by Pete Diglio and Anthony Orsano. Mineola took the win 12-8. We are the only all 13-year-old team in all leagues we've battled, so, a special hand to this hard working group of young men that has also signed up for the Glen Cove Tournaments. Lots of games ahead for what can only be described as questionable reasons.
