Representatives from the Towns of Oyster Bay, Hempstead and North Hempstead meet on Jan. 22, 1898 at Allen's Hotel in Mineola to consider forming a "new" county (These towns were at that time part of Queens County). A bill was introduced in the New York State Legislature on Friday Feb. 17, 1898 to establish the new county.
The name Nassau was chosen because in 1693 Long Island had been named as Nassau Island by the Colonial Assembly. The "bill" passed and was enacted into law in 1898.
Last week, the Water Department reports that our residents are utilizing over four million gallons of water a day.
Cornell Cooperative Extension suggests that generally it is better to water your lawn between the hours of 5 and 8 a.m. Watering during these hours minimizes the chance for fungi disease to infect your lawn and it is the most efficient time of day to water.
On Friday, July 6, we will be hosting a Teen Night at the pool. This is an evening of water activities and dancing. Musical entertainment will be provided by Sounds Purrfect Dee Jays
for all of our teen members and their guests who are 13 to 17 years old. You must have a "T" on your pass to be admitted.
The entertainment will be from 9 to 11:30 p.m. Please bring your own refreshments and come down for a great evening.
Our park recreation program is really starting to take off. Residents are utilizing our new equipment and activities. We post all the following week's schedule of activities outside the roller rink and inside the pool on the message board. Arts & Crafts are offered twice a week, sewing classes also are offered twice a week, and different ball games are scheduled daily.
Our new ping pong tables are a hit with all age groups and we would like to remind our residents that we have board games and playing cards for that "down time" in the shade.

Women battling cancer often suffer side effects from treatment that alter their appearance. These conditions can be minimized through hair and make-up techniques. Winthrop-University Hospital, in an effort to support women through this difficult time, is offering a free program, "Look Good-Feel Better." The program will be offered on Monday, July 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Hoag One Conference Room at Winthrop, located at 259 first Street in Mineola.
Women can learn how to look and feel their best by getting tips from professionals that will help minimize the effects of radiation and chemotherapy through special hairstyling, grooming and make-up techniques.
