The Shooting Stars, Mineola's U-14 girls travel team, continued their battle for first place in Division 5 play as Caitlin Herrera and Katie Steen each scored a goal in a losing effort against Port Washington 3-2. In a game full of controversial calls on both sides of the field, Caitlin Herrera opened the scoring for Mineola in the first half. Port Washington tied the score on a penalty shot opportunity to knot the game at 1 to 1. While Mineola opened the second half with a go ahead goal by Katie Steen, Port Washington came back strong with two goals of their own. One of these goals was scored on a second penalty shot opportunity. This loss puts Mineola four points out of first place with two games left in the season.
Just one week later, on a very hot and humid Saturday, Mineola took the field against the VOB Cyclones desperately needing a win to stay in the race for first place. Playing a controlled game from both an offensive and defensive perspective, Mineola tallied the game's first and only goal on a shot by Michelle McGuiness. Once again, Mineola's defensive unit of Sarah Mooney, Rose Vivinetto, Jessica Antonison and Jessica Napolitano proved themselves a formidable group against the Cyclones' forwards and a force in front of goal-keeper Joanna Canning. This win keeps Mineola four points behind the Auburndale Liberty with one game left in the season and a rainout game to make up, if necessary.
