Female mosquitoes live approximately four to eight weeks and they lay eggs every 10-14 days. Mosquito larvae primarily "live" in stagnant water and the most effective manner to protect yourself and the members of your family from mosquitoes is to get rid of all standing water in or about your home.

The obvious "containers" of water that should be regularly checked are: gutters, swimming pools, kiddie pools and lawn furniture.

If there is only a partial blockage in your gutters, a sufficient amount of water could accumulate to become a "breeding ground" for the mosquito larvae and this is likewise applicable to water in the kiddie pools.

Other "containers of water" that should be attended to are: birdbaths, dishes containing water for pets, the "reservoir" dishes on our flower planters/pots and children's toys.

The Cornell Cooperative extension (CCE) advises that the use of mulch will keep your garden soil moist and cool during the summer and they suggest that one uses a soaker hose or other type of drip irrigation to maximize the amount of the water that gets to the roots.

If you have a gardening question the CCE Helpline (454-0906) is open 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday- Thursday.
