The federal Communications Commission has received numerous complaints about a "new" long distance phone scam. This scam typically unfolds as follows:

- You get an email, voicemail, at your place of business or at home "telling you" to call a phone number with an 809 area code to collect a prize, find out about a sick relative, etc.

- You assume you are making a domestic long distance call since 809 appears to be a typical three digit U.S. area code.

- When you dial the "809" area code you are actually calling a number outside the United States.

- When you receive your monthly phone bill then and only then do you find out that you have been a victim of this scam.

To lessen your chances of becoming a victim you should check area codes before returning calls and/or if you don't generally make international calls, you can ask your phone company to block outgoing international calls on your line.

Senator Balboni has available a brochure that gives particulars about New Do Not Call Registry. If you would like to have more information and/or the brochure please contact Senator Balboni's local office at 873-0736 or by calling 1-86-NO CALLNY.

If you are interested in receiving less junk mail at home you can contact the Mail Preference Service (MPS). This organization is consumer sponsored by the Direct Marketing Association.

You should register with the MPS name-removal file on line (www.the-dma.org/consumers/offmailinglist.html.) Your registration is good for five years.

You will continue to receive junk mail for at least three months after you register and since some organizations are not members of the MPS the only way to stop such mail is to send a letter to these non-member organizations advising you do not want to receive further mail from them.
