The Welcome to Mineola sign erected by the Mineola Chamber of Commerce contains the plaques of 14 Mineola organizations: The Lions Club, The Rotary, The Kiwanis, The Boy Scouts, The Oddfellows, The Portugese Lions Club, The Adolph Block Post of the VFW, The American Legion, The Masons, The Portugese Center, The Italian-American Club, The Eastern Stars, the Knights of Columbus, and the 14th, of course, the Chamber of Commerce. The sign is on the east side of the old village hall on Jericho Turnpike.

Mineola's newest meter person is Ron Rental and he works a shift that runs from 4 a.m. to noon and is able to tag a number of early morning violators. The rest of the crew is comprised of Frank Syracuse, Lori McCarron, Stuart Goldstein, Florence Peterson and Stan Stone.

Jerry and Gertrude Hanson, who lived for many years on Latham Road, have returned to Long Island after spending 15 years in Florida. They now reside in West Hempstead. Welcome back.

Our daughter, Sr. Annmarie, IHM, is a leader in the fight against the death penalty. She recently joined in a group of nuns and priest demonstrating by singing hymns in front of the federal building in Scranton, PA.

Ginny DeMille of Garden City tells us that her husband, Nelson, is busy working on a new novel and is under a deadline. Nelson DeMille is Long Island's leading author, having written Plum Island, The Gold Coast, The Lions Game and The General's Daughter, among many other books.

Luigi's in Port Washington was the scene of a big party, the 80th birthday of Alice Grom on June 2. Alice works every day as a waitress at the Jericho. This amazing lady spends eight hours a day on her feet. Her sons, daughters and grandchildren came from all over the country, some as far away as California, for the happy occasion. Alice and her husband, Stan, live on Arlington Street.
