The Better Business Bureau website (http://www.bb.org) has helpful hints to protect consumers from becoming victims of "scams."

How many times have you received an "Awards/ Prize Notification" in the mail? All you have to do is call a 900 number, send money to prepay taxes or prepay shipping charges. Do not respond. Per the Better Business Bureau "...Phony prize or sweepstakes promotions cost consumers millions of dollars a year."

Another consumer tip is to be "Beware of Bogus Law Enforcement Groups." The Better Business Bureau suggests that before donating if you are suspicious, call the Better Business Bureau for a reliability report.

You should also ask the soliciting organization for printed information, such as a brochure describing its programs, a list of its board members, etc.

Never, never be intimated by "hard sell" tactics and there is no reason whatsoever why a representative of the soliciting organization should come to your home or office to "pick up" your contribution.
