Mineola is fortunate enough to have two active veteran organizations - the American Legion Memorial Post 349 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Private Adolph Block Post 1305. Members of both organizations including commanders Carl Marchese and Manny Grilo made certain the community did not forget the veterans who made the supreme sacrifice to preserve America's freedom by holding a parade and ceremony on Memorial Day.
Those groups participated in the parade that met at Wilson Park. Citizens of all ages and all organizations shared a common bond - the enjoyment of living in the United States. With rain threatening but holding off, the American Legion and VFW members led the march into the streets of Mineola. On the sidewalks, observers clapped in appreciation. The parade was alive with the beat of the Chaminade High School marching band and each step was a paid tribute to those who lost their lives in times of war and times of peace as well.

The parade concluded at Memorial Park where the commanders as well as the dignitaries present were stationed on the new Mineola Memorial Library Deck. Nearby, wreaths were placed around the veterans' monument.
Mr. Marchese spoke about the true meaning of Memorial Day and about the sacrifice many men and women had made for the good of the country. Mr. Marchese said that it is very important for every citizen not to forget why America has enjoyed its freedom.
Mr. Grilo spoke about the importance of veteran organizations and urged all veterans to become involved in one. He then presented a tree, in memory of the veterans of World War II, to Deputy Mayor Santosus, who said the tree would be planted in a prominent place in the village. Mr. Grilo also presented Nassau County Executive Thomas Gulotta with a plaque in recognition of his support to the veterans during his time as county executive.
Among the dignitaries present were Mineola Deputy Mayor Lou Santosus, trustees Maryanne Warnecke and Linda Fairgrieve, Village Justice John O'Shea, Father Tom Murphy of Corpus Christi, Mr. Gulotta, Nassau County Legislator Richard Nicolello, Town of Hempstead Supervisor May Newburger, Town Councilman Anthony D'Urso and District Court Judge Scott Fairgrieve.
In observance of the brothers and sisters who are no longer among the living, Taps was played as well as a moment of silence. Although many may be missing family members, friends or neighbors, there memories are kept alive each and every day we enjoy freedom.
